DESIGN : MARTIN VISSER (1960)
Dining chair SE05 was designed by Martin Visser in 1960.
Visser had a strong preference for craft-built furniture. Many of his designs have an industrial style, but are usually craft made. He also stretched production techniques to the limit; he preferred to make what was almost impossible. An example of this is that he did not bend metal tubing like most other designers did, but he had cut and welded well defined crisp joints. He loved to make simple furniture using as little material as possible but with the clearest possible shapes.
Since start of production in 1960 the steel frames were polished and chrome plated. Since 2016 there is another variation available in black powder coating. During the 1980s it was difficult to purchase high quality rattan so the natural material was replaced with an artificial type. After many years of research it worked out that reliable resources for natural rattan were found again in 2011. The warm range of colors, in combination with the feel and sound of the real rattan, give these classic pieces a rich charisma! Ever since the Furniture Fair in Cologne in January 2011 natural rattan was used for production of this iconic dining chair.
The rattan material can be cleaned with a soft wet cloth, soft (tooth)brush and in case of a stain add a bit of neutral soap. Do not soak the rattan in water and let is dry completely before re-use again.
The dining chair is also available with saddle leather (version SE06) or fabric upholstery (version SE07).
